This tattoo handles the social issue of both inequality and inequity in education. This specific image depicts a scene in a footrace, where there the most notable athlete cannot step forward due to a burden of money and time, symbolizing financial inability to afford school tuition, and the need for the family to send these children to work and bring in an income as money is so sparse. This creates a cycle in which the child has to go to work, probably working long grueling hours for a meager pay, which keeps them from going to school as it is. This is educational inequality, as basic education in general is not accessible to all. However, even if you live in a country where basic education is mandated for all, there can be disparities in the education field, and this is referred to as educational inequity. Because education is mandated to all, competition gets intense as students yearn to prove themselves intellectually superior to their peers. This creates a high dependence on supplementary education, which is often expensive and therefore only accessible to families who are extremely affluent and financially capable. Ultimately, socioeconomic class and status is what determines the range and quality of resources you may access, leading the wealthier students to perform better academically. This perpetuates a cycle in which these students are qualified for the limited opportunities in the future, and it further solidifies the gaps between socioeconomic classes, making it extremely difficult for an individual to better their socioeconomic status: the disparities in resource accessibility exacerbate differences in academic performance by socioeconomic class.
