This tattoo depicts a serpent winding around a rose, which is on the verge of strangling and crushing the flower. The serpent serves as a symbolic animalification of microaggressions various people encounter on a daily basis, solely due to innate and intrinsic facets of their identity. Although some people may brush it off as insignificant and humorous, to the recipient it could feel as if every passive-aggressive, back-handed word spoken to them feels as if it chokes and constricts them tighter and tighter, inhibiting their capabilities and inciting feels of oppression, just like how this serpent tightens around the rose. This tattoo serves as a reminder of how microaggressions, both intentional and unintentional can severely degrade an individual's self-esteem or personal sense of worth; this is ultimately a form of symbolic violence as it indirectly spreads the reinforcement of the harmful stereotypes which enkindles microaggressions by those who exist within this social stratification. Unconsciously, victims may find themselves internalizing these notions, which damages the ability to thrive in an environment as well as causing them to become reluctant to participate and exert their full potential.
